Company Lade AS was established in 2010 to develop the project VindskipTM. A state of the art design as per 2012 is holding both a Norwegian Patent and a WIPO PCT International Patent on the concept. Project VindskipTM is a hybrid merchant vessel for sustainable sea transport. Through an innovative concept, it is meeting tomorrow’s demands for fuel economy and emission control with today’s technology. Fuel savings is estimated to 60%, reduction in emission 80%. Vindskip™ by company Lade AS

Governing idea of the Vindskip™ a hybrid eco-efficient vessel powered by the wind and LNG
The relative wind is a crucial factor in designing aircrafts, trains, propellers and sailing boats. For the construction of merchant ships this is a revolutionary new way of thinking. Being inspired by the aerospace industry and the sailing environment, Vindskip™ is designed to utilize wind for propulsion. The unique is the design of the hull, both above and under water.
A vessel with a hull shaped like a symmetrical air foil going in the relative wind, will generate an aerodynamic lift giving a pull in the ships direction, within an angular sector of the course.
This is Vindskip™’s Wind Power System. With a LNG-powered Propulsion System in addition, starting the ship from zero, one can exploit the aerodynamic lift now generated to create speed and save fuel: It becomes a Dynamic System keeping a constant speed on the ship through a Cruise Control.

Ship types that are particularly relevant to the Vindskip™-design, is the so-called dry cargo ships: RoRo, RoPax, PCTC, passenger, container ships and LNG-carrier membrane type.

The Concept
The concept is containing of three parts:
Wind Power System

Weather Routing Module version Vindskip™
Using computerized weighting of meteorological data, a computer program can calculate a ships best route. By developing navigation algorithms which can give you the optimum wind angle for maximum effect of the design, you can find the best route across the ocean, either most economical or by ETA.
Powered by the wind and LNG
Rolls-Royce has devised a LNG propulsion system to meet the Vindskip™ requirements that retains a high level of efficiency over a wide range of power outputs, minimising greenhouse gas and NOX emissions, and eliminating the sulphur emissions that are a problem with today’s conventional PCTCs burning residual fuel.
Liquefied natural gas (LNG) is the fuel, contained in two tanks holding sufficient for about 70 days of steaming at 17 knots
Stakeholders globally are recognising the importance of creating more eco-efficient solutions. This is evident through the introduction of new or amended regulations for the marine environment such as MARPOL Annex VI. Furthermore, Emission Control Areas (ECAs) are being introduced to help reduce emissions of SOx. Due to its very low fuel consumption, Vindskip™ can utilise LNG as fuel and will be capable of 70 days of steaming, worst case, between bunkering.
