Norwegian Ship Design is an independent company established early 2019 by a group of highly experienced and skilled Naval Architects and engineers formerly holding key positions in other Norwegian ship design companies. Delivering first class Ship Design, Consultancy and Advisory services to satisfied and returning customers.

We firmly believe that Wind Propulsion will play an important part in decarbonizing shipping. We have worked with different forms of Wind Assisted Ship Propulsion for about a decade now, and promoting this in the shipping community. Our concept “Powered by Nature”, developed in close cooperation with ship owner Egil Ulvan Rederi, won a tender in March 2021 for zero emission transport of cargo on a fixed route in Norway. The concept includes two large Flettner rotors and estimates show that on average about 50% of the ship’s energy requirement for propulsion can be supplied by the rotors. The remaining energy will be supplied by hydrogen through an internal combustion engine and fuel cells. The 88 m long self-discharging bulk vessel is planned for start of operation in Q1 2024. The cargo owners saw the potential in wind assisted propulsion has, and our concept won partly due to our inclusion of Flettner Rotors.
